The NFL is backtracking on plans to host a supplemental draft, leaving Brendan Sorsby hanging.

The quarterback had hoped to enter the league via said draft, but will not have the opportunity to play therein in 2026.

This version of the NFL Draft has not produced a pro since 2019, but it was highly anticipated, with the league expected to host one this year. However, officials have decided against it as they reckon it would be a distraction as teams look to start training camp.

ESPN cites a league source claiming Sorsby’s “application carries with it a lot of issues.”

They added that there were “core game integrity issues.”

Sorsby’s attorney, Jeffrey Kessler, has vowed to take the NFL to task over its decision, telling ESPN it was “a violation of the CBA and the law.”

“We will pursue this immediately with the NFLPA,” he added.

Sorsby admitted to placing thousands of bets on college and pro sports, including on Indiana, while he was with the program.

“Your Petition — filed three business days before the deadline, without any supporting information or documentation, and only after abandoning your recent litigation efforts to avoid NCAA sanctions — does not provide a basis for the League to alter those plans,” the NFL told him in a letter.

Sorsby got a temporary injunction that would have allowed him to play at Texas Tech this year. However, he withdrew it after the Big 12 filed federal claims, instead declaring for the supplemental draft.

The quarterback was the No. 1 player in the portal this offseason. His gambling confession, coupled with his entry into an in-house treatment facility, derailed plans to continue playing in college.

He sought respite in the supplemental draft, but this pathway has also been blocked.

The Arizona Cardinals’ selection of Jalen Thompson in 2019 marks the last time a player entered the league via the supplemental draft.

The NFL held another one in 2023, but all teams passed up on drafting players.
