Mike Onwenu is not going to play another game this year.

The New England Patriots’ starting right guard suffered a significant right ankle injury during Sunday’s game. The severe injury occurred with less than one minute remaining in the opening quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Steelers pass rusher T.J. Watt crashed into Onwenu below the knees from behind while sacking Drake Maye. Consequently, Watt accidentally rolled up on the veteran offensive lineman’s right leg. Onwenu remained down on the turf for several minutes as medical personnel rushed out to evaluate him.

Onwenu Carted Off

Trainers quickly brought out the medical cart to transport the visibly hurting lineman off the field. The Patriots almost immediately ruled him out for the remainder of the game due to the ankle injury.

Following his abrupt departure, veteran offensive lineman Greg Van Roten stepped in to take over at right guard. Losing Onwenu deals a massive blow to the offense because he is New England’s longest-tenured, most durable lineman.

Losing Onwenu significantly dampens the Patriots’ protection scheme because he represents the offense’s longest-tenured and most consistent player. Furthermore, his extreme durability has historically anchored New England’s interior front. Sunday’s matchup marked his 100th career regular-season game and his 92nd career start.

The former sixth-round draft pick out of Michigan has missed only three games in his entire NFL career. He regularly led the team in total offensive snaps played across the 2022, 2024, and 2025 seasons.
