Star QB/TE Taysom Hill Is Still A Free Agent — Here’s Why

Taysom Hill officially announced his departure from the New Orleans Saints in July. He played nine seasons there. But as a do-it-all football player, it’s quite puzzling why he hasn’t been signed by any team yet.
His announcement to step away from the Saints wasn’t a retirement, though.
Truth be told, not many players listed on the Pro Football Reference site had a ‘QB-TE-WR’ title under their name. Hill’s NFL career was a unique one, no doubt. Over the years, he has attracted interest from multiple teams due to his unique skill set.
Why Taysom Hill Remains A Free Agent
The biggest hurdle for Hill is his age. He’s now 36. Born in 1990, he did not make his NFL debut until 2017, when he was already 27. He started late because of his Mormon mission.
As mentioned above, Hill played multiple positions while playing for the New Orleans Saints.
He ran 489 times for 2,551 yards and 34 touchdowns. Plus, he caught 110 passes for 1,034 yards and 11 touchdowns. To sum it all up, he also completed 195 of 308 passes for 2,426 yards and 12 touchdowns.
It must be good to be able to play multiple positions at the NFL level, right? Well, there are pros and cons to that kind of skill level. As a do-it-all player, a team must cater to Hill’s style because he has his own offensive system.
And not many teams in the league can afford that. A two-way player may be easier to cater to than a multi-faceted one.
No Word Yet If Hill Will Retire
With the new season inching closer and closer, no word yet if Taysom Hill will retire. Teams have been extremely busy ahead of opening week. Adding an aging player might not be in the cards for most of the teams.
And Hill isn’t in the driver’s seat regarding his future, too, at least in the NFL. Sure, a team may still see some value in him, but he’ll likely play a certain way rather than play multiple positions just because he can.
The Saints already gave him a proper sendoff at the end of his stint with the team. Maybe that was it for Hill’s career. We just haven’t accepted it yet.
