Following his July arrest in Wisconsin for suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, Tony Romo was placed on indefinite leave by CBS Sports.
He has been replaced on the network’s top NFL broadcast team by JJ Watt. Industry reports indicate that media executives believe his future with the network is in serious doubt.
Romo was cited for an open container and unsafe passing in addition to the OWI suspicion during the Milwaukee traffic stop. He declined a breath test following the field sobriety evaluations. His upcoming court date is scheduled for September 21, 2026, though he is not required to attend.
Now, CBS is punishing him even further.

An indefinite leave from CBS Sports has kept Tony Romo away from the network’s annual NFL media day preparations in Manhattan. The event brings together on-air talent and production staff ahead of the upcoming regular season.
“CBS will have its NFL Media Day in Manhattan on Tuesday, and much of the focus is expected to center around someone who will not be there — Tony Romo,” Andrew Marchand reported.
“CBS has had all of its on-air and key production people at its Manhattan studios for the past two days as it prepares for the season. CBS had previously announced that Romo was on leave ‘until further notice,’ which includes not being in New York this week.”
Attendance by the lead analyst was expected under normal circumstances before recent developments changed the plans. Focus during the two-day sessions has shifted toward the temporary booth arrangement instead.
J.J. Watt has been elevated to work alongside Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson for the time being. Furthermore, the network previously announced that the leave would continue until further notice after the July arrest. Meanwhile, court proceedings related to the matter remain scheduled for September. Consequently, the absence from this week’s company event underscores the ongoing separation from day-to-day operations.
