Nick Bosa faces another hurdle in his return from a torn ACL. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end is now considered week-to-week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the latest issue on Tuesday.

Bosa has tendinitis in his surgically repaired right knee. He has missed practices since early August due to soreness. The team is managing the situation carefully during training camp.

Shanahan called the development common. He estimated that about 90 percent of players experience similar tendinitis during ACL rehab. The coach stressed the need to stay smart week to week.

Shanahan expressed no major long-term concerns. He said the team has no worries beyond the current soreness and inflammation. Bosa continues working on the side while the issue settles.

This marks Bosa’s third ACL injury overall. He tore the same knee in high school and again during the 2025 season. He played only three games last year before the latest tear.

Bosa had previously noted that surgeons cleaned up some chronic tendinitis during the most recent procedure. He hoped the knee would feel better once full recovery finished. The current setback shows the process remains gradual.

The 49ers open the regular season against the Los Angeles Rams in Australia. Shanahan still feels good about Bosa’s chances of being available. The team wants him fully ready rather than rushed.

Bosa has limited practice participation so far this camp. He worked individual drills earlier before the soreness increased. Medical staff continues monitoring the surgically repaired knee closely.

A healthy Bosa remains critical for San Francisco’s defense. The edge rusher has been a cornerstone when available. His ability to pressure quarterbacks changes games.

The 49ers will evaluate him on a week-to-week basis moving forward. Fans and the organization hope the tendinitis calms quickly. Nick Bosa’s presence on the field for Week 1 would provide a major boost.
