Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice spoke about his recent jail time. He called the experience a reality check. Rice served 30 days after a probation violation.

The violation stemmed from an earlier high-speed crash case. Rice pleaded guilty to related charges last year. He entered Dallas County jail in mid-May and left in June.

Rice underwent knee surgery shortly before the sentence. He focused on rehab while behind bars. Teammates and trainers stayed in contact throughout.

“A learning experience. A reality check, and don’t focus on the past, focus on what’s going on right now,” Rice said.

He kept his mind right with comedy and calls.

“It was tough. It was mentally tough,” Rice explained. “They gave me ways to communicate with my teammates still, as well as my athletic trainer.”

He watched Kevin Hart shows to stay positive. Communication with the outside world helped a lot. Rice said the time taught him not to take anything for granted.

Asked what he wants people to know, he stayed focused.

“I’m 100% locked in with what’s going on now with the team. Ready to go out there and dominate.”

He also highlighted his role as a father.

Patrick Mahomes rehabbed nearby at the same time. The two worked together at the facility after Rice’s release. Their shared recovery built a stronger bond.

“I’m doing good mentally,” Rice added. “I’ve got the right group of guys around me. Good agents, good coaches, small circle on anybody that’s outside that’s not part of the football team. Just keeping my head straight and also keeping me in a positive attitude.

“I mean, I had times where I could talk to my trainers. Times where me and Pat (Mahomes), during the summer, were just grinding in the facility, just me and him and the trainers.

“It sounds good to keep building that relationship, on and off the field, and just having someone you know will always back you up.”

The wideout has ramped up work at training camp. He continues building chemistry with the offense. Rice aims to stay locked in and contribute right away.
