Troy Aikman faces new limits this season after taking a consultant role with the Miami Dolphins. The Hall of Fame quarterback also serves as the lead analyst on ESPN’s Monday Night Football. His dual positions prompted the league to act. The NFL now applies the same restrictions it uses for Tom Brady, who owns a stake in the Raiders and works as a Fox analyst.
NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy outlined the rules clearly.
“There have been no issues with Tom over the last two seasons,” he said. “It is up to the coaches and clubs what they share with him. If they share information they shouldn’t, then that’s on them. The same parameters that pertained to Tom last season will continue this year and also will apply to Troy.”
Troy Aikman Restricted From Team Facilities
Troy Aikman cannot access practice facilities or practices under the new rules. He may only attend production meetings virtually before games. Interviews with players and coaches must take place outside team facilities. The league allows those conversations at team hotels in a separate area from other personnel.
“Both may attend production meetings virtually but will have no access to practice facilities or practices,” McCarthy continued. “They may conduct interviews outside team facilities with football personnel and players. They could conduct the interview at the team hotel in an area separate from other football personnel. They could broadcast games involving their own club.”

Troy Aikman Continues Dual Role Despite Limits
Aikman helped the Dolphins hire their new general manager and head coach earlier this year. He has said he plans to keep working with the team in some capacity from that moment on. The restrictions aim to prevent any competitive advantage from his dual roles. Coaches and clubs remain responsible for what information they choose to share.
Aikman has called Monday Night Football alongside Joe Buck since 2022. The pair has worked together for more than two decades across different networks. The Dolphins do not appear on the Monday Night schedule this season, which reduces one potential conflict. These rules keep broadcasters from gaining unfair insight while holding team positions.
Fans will still hear Aikman on the call each Monday night. He simply prepares without walking the practice fields of opposing teams. The arrangement allows him to stay involved with Miami while fulfilling his primary broadcast duties for ESPN.
