Tony Romo faces serious questions about his future at CBS. The network placed him on leave after a July 23 arrest in Wisconsin.

Boomer Esiason offered a blunt prediction this week. The former NFL MVP and longtime CBS analyst spoke on his WFAN radio show.

“If I had to guess, purely speculation given what’s going on right now, I would think it’s over,” Esiason said.

He added that Romo “may end up going somewhere else and getting things straightened out.”

Tony Romo Arrest Details Fuel Speculation

Police pulled over Tony Romo on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee. Deputies cited him for operating while intoxicated. They also found an open container of alcohol in his Jeep.

Romo had played in a golf tournament earlier that day. He told officers he was heading to visit his grandparents. Bodycam footage showed him refusing a preliminary breath test.

CBS Sports moved quickly. The network put Romo on leave until further notice. Former Houston Texans star JJ Watt stepped into the lead analyst role beside Jim Nantz.

Romo’s court date is set for September 21. That falls at the end of Week 2 of the 2026 NFL season.

Tony Romo Still Has Strong Support

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones showed strong support to Romo while speaking with reporters.

“I love him. I love what he’s about,” Jones said. “He’s a very, very unique talent.”

Jones pointed to Romo’s history of overcoming adversity.

“And the real question is — and I don’t even have to ask what the answer is: Do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down?”

Romo rose from undrafted free agent to four-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the Cowboys. He later became one of the highest-paid analysts in sports media. His ability to predict plays made him a fan favorite in the booth.

CBS has not issued a final decision. Network president David Berson recently said there is “no timetable or final decision at this time.”
