Another tragedy hit the NFL world. One of the members of the iconic 1972 Miami Dolphins team sadly passed away at age 79.
The 1972 Dolphins remain the only team to go undefeated for a whole season. Bob Heinz, a former defensive tackle who helped anchor that team, sadly passed away. His son announced the death Tuesday morning.
“Bob Heinz, who played DT for the Miami Dolphins from 1969-1977, has passed away at 79, his son John said Tuesday. Bob was a member of the ‘No-Name Defense’ and a starter on the only undefeated team in NFL history,” Joe Schad wrote.
How The Dolphins Legend Helped Build Miami’s Historic Championship Defense

Heinz donned the Dolphins’ uniform from 1969 through 1977. He became a member of the “No-Name Defense” and started for the still-untouched 1972 squad. Heinz appeared in 122 NFL games, recording nine sacks.
With the Dolphins, he won Super Bowls VII and VIII. After his tenure with the AFC East team ended, he played one season in Washington before calling it a career.
Heinz is survived by his wife, Carol; his children, Julie, Joe, and John; daughter-in-law, Laura; grandchildren, Matthew and Samantha; sister-in-law, Claire Covington; and his nieces and nephews.
His family asked that donations be made in Bob’s memory to the Miami Dolphins Foundation instead of sending flowers to the service.
