Last week, Jonathon Cooper was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and criminal mischief. The Denver Broncos linebacker allegedly had a physical altercation with his girlfriend over cheating allegations and damaged cell phones.
Cooper attended the Broncos’ offseason program and OTAs, though his long-term roster availability could be affected by potential NFL discipline.
Now his status on the team and in the NFL is in serious jeopardy.
Jonathon Cooper Gets Hit With More Charges

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Cooper has received two new charges following an incident with his girlfriend the night of June 4. Cooper and his girlfriend both initially faced two charges of domestic violence and a misdemeanor criminal mischief.
Jonathon Cooper faces an additional felony charge of second-degree assault by strangulation and a charge of third-degree assault — knowingly or recklessly causing bodily injury, 3rd-degree assault — knowingly or recklessly causing injury, along with his initial charge of criminal mischief between $300-$1,000.
The criminal mischief charge stemmed from Cooper damaging his girlfriend’s cell phone by biting it. He reportedly did this after his girlfriend threw his cell phone against a wall.
In the meantime, a protection order was also initially issued against Cooper, barring him from contacting his girlfriend.
He was in court this week and entered a plea of not guilty to his criminal mischief charge. A motion hearing was set for July 6 and a jury trial set for July 22. The NFL and the Broncos said they are both aware of the charges and are monitoring the situation.
The outside linebacker played all 17 games in the 2025 season. He recorded 50 total tackles (23 solo), 8.0 sacks, and 4 passes defensed. Cooper was a reason why the team came within one game of advancing to the Super Bowl.
