The Detroit Lions have made an official decision on Jack Campbell.

Campbell’s neck injury has hung over the team all week. The All-Pro linebacker went down early in the fourth quarter of Detroit’s 19-15 win over the Minnesota Vikings on November 1. Medical staff immobilized him and stretchered him off.

Campbell stayed face down after tackling tight end T.J. Hockenson. He was alert and breathing when he left for the hospital. Campbell later said he has full movement in his lower body. “I know there’s still work ahead, but I remain very optimistic,” he said.

The Lions made their official decision Saturday, one day before their game in Miami. Tom Pelissero is reporting that Detroit has placed Campbell on injured reserve. That rules him out for at least four games this season, though he was never going to return in the near future.

Pro Football Talk reports that Trevor Nowaske should start alongside Derrick Barnes and Malcolm Rodriguez. Detroit also brought in cornerback Nick Whiteside from the practice squad. It elevated defensive end Anthony Lucas and running back Jabari Small for Sunday.

The Lions visit the Miami Dolphins without their leading tackler. Campbell had 54 tackles through six games this season.

He earned first-team All-Pro honors last season and signed a four-year, $81 million extension.
