Former San Francisco 49ers star Aldon Smith has passed away at the age of 36.
According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, the former defensive end died in Northern California on Saturday morning.
“Former 49ers pass rusher Aldon Smith died this morning in Northern California,” Wagoner reports. “He was 36.”
San Francisco 49ers Release Heartbreaking Statement

The 49ers drafted Smith in the first round in 2011. He was an All-Pro and Pro Bowler during his stint with the NFC outfit.
“We are devastated by the sudden and tragic passing of Aldon Smith,” the Niners said in a statement. “Aldon’s undeniable talent and sheer dominance on the field were on display from the moment he joined our organization, having recorded one of the best rookie seasons the National Football League has seen.”
“Beyond his excellence as a player, Aldon will be remembered for his infectious smile that lit up every room he walked into,” the team added. “Our entire organization sends its deepest condolences to the Smith family and all who knew and loved Aldon.”
NFL podcast host Chase Senior has also reported that Smith was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital in San Jose, California, and was dead on arrival.
