Jerry Jones offered an explanation for a familiar Cowboys complaint on Tuesday.

The Dallas Cowboys fell 33-30 in overtime to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, dropping them to 3-5. Dallas led 24-10 early in the fourth quarter before Arizona scored 20 straight points.

Jones addressed firing Brian Schottenheimer after the game. Schottenheimer is in his second season as head coach.

The Cowboys owner has since responded to the notion that he does not spend top dollar on coaches.

“There is zero correlation between how much you pay a coach or how many coaches you have as to winning,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan’s Shan & RJ show. “There is no correlation. And that’s a random sample of years and all 32 teams involved. So put that in your hopper and smoke it.”

Mike McCarthy Is 6-2 With The Steelers After Leaving Dallas

Jones promoted Schottenheimer from offensive coordinator after Mike McCarthy parted ways. Schottenheimer is 10-14-1 as Dallas head coach.

McCarthy is 6-2 as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, having replaced Mike Tomlin after the latter’s decision to step down.

CBS Sports writer Jared Dubin noted that coaching salaries are not made public. He also pointed out that Dallas has not reached the NFC title game since the 1995 season.

Others have criticized the Cowboys’ coaching too. Michael Irvin did so on Monday’s First Take, claiming his dead mom could do a better job. Stephen A. Smith joined him in blasting Schottenheimer on the show while campaigning for Rex Ryan.

The Cowboys will play the Indianapolis Colts away this coming Sunday.
