San Francisco 49ers fans feared the worst after a viral post claimed newly acquired wide receiver Mike Evans had suffered a hamstring injury that would sideline him for the rest of training camp.

The report stated Evans’ availability for Week 1 was uncertain and that San Francisco planned to take a cautious approach.

It looked believable.

After all, the 49ers have dealt with an avalanche of injuries over the past few seasons, making another setback seem entirely plausible.

But there was one factor everyone overlooked.

The report originated from an account that cites @RichJohnsonNFL, a parody account. Several of Johnson’s posts have gone viral recently, but they’ve all been exposed as fake.

No credible reporters, including those covering the 49ers daily, have confirmed that Evans suffered a hamstring injury.

The false report nevertheless spread rapidly, prompting plenty of reactions before users began pointing out its source.

“And it starts… like clockwork for the 49ers,” one fan said.

Another said he was “not drafting any 49ers this year. See you in 2027.”

“Damn he just had a beautiful catch yesterday that wasn’t against Atl,” another lamented.

One user claimed that the “Substation [was] on a generational run.”

The rumor gained traction partly because it surfaced shortly after another devastating blow to San Francisco’s receiving corps. The 49ers recently lost Ricky Pearsall for the upcoming season after he underwent surgery, leaving fans especially sensitive to any injury news involving the team’s wide receivers.

As of Monday, there has been no verified report that Evans is dealing with a hamstring injury or expected to miss the remainder of training camp.

The episode serves as another reminder that convincing parody accounts continue to fool thousands of NFL fans during training camp, when injury news spreads faster than almost anything else.
