The New York Jets traded wide receiver and special teams player Irvin Charles to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2028, according to The Athletic.

Charles spent the last few years building a strong role on special teams for the Jets. He played in 25 games during the 2023 and 2024 seasons, recording 14 tackles. The New Jersey native was doing well inside the organization because of his energy and strong play as a gunner on special teams.

The 29-year-old missed the entire 2025 season after tearing his ACL late in 2024. He stayed on the Physically Unable to Perform list all year. Even after the injury, teams still showed interest in him because of his value on special teams.

Former Jets coach Robert Saleh once called Charles “an absolute wolf” because of how hard he played on special teams. Charles proved that during his time in New York. He made seven tackles in 2023 and blocked a punt against the Tennessee Titans in 2024.

The trade also showed how crowded the Jets’ wide receiver group became heading into the 2026 season. The team added several new players over the last two years, which made it tough for Charles to earn a roster spot.

The Jets already have Garrett Wilson as their top receiver. The team also traded for Adonai Mitchell last season and drafted Omar Cooper Jr. in the first round this year. Rookie Arian Smith also impressed coaches with his special teams play. On top of that, the Jets signed veteran Tim Patrick to a one-year, $2 million contract.

With so many receivers on the roster, there was not much room left for Charles.

Now, the Seattle Seahawks give him another chance to continue his NFL career. Seattle also has a crowded receiver group led by Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Cooper Kupp, and Rashid Shaheed. Younger players like Tory Horton and Jake Bobo are also competing for spots.

Still, Charles could earn a role again if he performs well on special teams. That remains his best path to making the roster in Seattle, either on the active team or the practice squad.
